GATE

Gifted And Talented Education

head with puzzle pieces

As part of our ongoing commitment to equity and opportunity, all 1st and 4th grade students (who are not already GATE-identified) at Rocklin Academy Family of Schools will be screened for potential identification as Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). We will be completing the screener, in class, during the fall. Early screening helps us support student learning in the current school year through classroom differentiation, as well as inform GATE cluster placement for the following year.

GATE Families of students in 2nd - 3rd and 5th-11th who are new to our schools this year or who did not take the GATE screening assessment last year, may chose to register to have their child(ren) participate in the screening process  typically in January. We will notify parents of testing dates through the school's weekly communication a few weeks before testing.  Testing is only available for currently enrolled students.  The timing of this assessment will help us identify potential GATE students. We will provide differentiation within their current class and appropriately place them into GATE clusters for the next school year.

Each school district in CA and each state across the nation determines their own identification practices for Gifted and Talented Education services. If your child has already been identified by Rocklin Academy Family of Schools, they will not need to test again. If a student has been identified in another district using criteria the meets or exceeds Rocklin Academy Family of Schools criteria for GATE identification, the student will be identified GATE and no further testing is required. In order to determine whether or not your child’s GATE status is transferable, documentation of GATE status from the previous district/state will be required. Please provide RAFOS with the following documents:
  • District letter verifying GATE status and
  • GATE screening assessment results  (Please ensure it includes assessment name)

Rocklin Academy Family of Schools strives to identify and serve gifted and high achieving students from all groups, including those from diverse racial, socioeconomic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. Through highly motivating lessons and appropriate placement in classroom clusters, we provide differentiated learning opportunities during the regular school day that are based on grade level standards extended by depth, complexity and acceleration which enable students to reach their full academic and personal potential.

GATE Identification Process

The intellectual development of a gifted individual is significantly advanced in relation to chronological peers. The process to be formally identified in the GATE Program includes the following:

  • Intellectual or Cognitive Ability. Rocklin Academy Family of Schools utilizes the Naglieri Non-verbal Ability Test (3rd edition), otherwise known as NNAT3, which is a non-verbal assessment measuring high-level observation skills and cognitive ability. A student must score at or above the 97th percentile.

In addition, the process includes up to three additional measures of a student’s ability or potential:

  • Academic Performance. Performing one full year above grade level in ELA and/or Mathematics (grades 1-3). In grades 4 and up, a student must "Exceeds" standards on CAASPP in ELA and/or Mathematics.

  • Impact Factors – Medical history, socioeconomic status and participation in the English Language Development Program are taken into consideration
